Club Nintendo Japan goes bananas with new items

Club Nintendo Japan delivers the goods again

Nintendo Japan has updated its Club Nintendo reward offerings with some choice new items. First up is a Donkey Kong Country Returns soundtrack CD. There are 25 tracks on the soundtrack, thats even more than the Mario 25th Anniversary one. The banana coloured CD looks quite striking as well.

The other new items are two Kirbys Epic Yarn themed pouches. Unlike usual Club Nintendo offerings, theyre not really sized to store any Nintendo product in particular.

If youre really keen on either item keep an eye out for the items on eBay at some point in the future. It would be cool though if say, oh Nintendo Australia were to offer either of these items too. Just saying.

News: Activision: COD Elite will kill cheaters

Dedicated staff ensure nothing "exposed".

Amid the ongoing Sony hack furore, Activision has pledged to ensure that Call of Duty: Elite, the new multiplayer-focused service set to launch alongside Modern Warfare 3 this November, will help rid the game of cheaters.

Call of Duty games have in recent years been prone to exploits, some of which have ruined the online experience of legitimate players by altering their statistics.

But Activision told Eurogamer the Beachhead-developed Elite should ensure such problems are a thing of the past.

Sony admits it will post a big loss

Sony has told the market that it is now expecting to post a 1.9 billion net loss for the last financial year.

The electronics giant has admitted that earlier predictions of a (527m) 70 billion yen profit had been confounded by Japanese tax credits.

The 260 billion yen net loss is another bit of bad news for Sony, a company that has suffered a torrid time of late.

Annus horribilis

As well as the horrific Japanese earthquake, the company has also suffered from the well-publicised PSN outage and the loss of customers' personal details.

Sony has estimated that the quake has cost them 150 billion yen (1.13 billion) and that the known costs of the outage amount to over 100 million.

The final earnings report will be made on Thursday, but 2011 is proving to be something of an annus horribilis for the company.

However, there it potentially light at the end of the tunnel, with the company's eagerly awaited PSP 2 - codenamed the NGP - arriving later in the year, and the growth of 3D handing a timely boost across Sony's myriad business interests.

Nintendo and Best Buy team up for SpotPass content in America

Its all coming together, well at least in America

Nintendos detailed plans for its free SpotPass content in other parts of the world and now for Americans at least we know now were theyll be able to get their SpotPass on. Starting from the magical date of June 7th, over 1,000 Best Buy stores in America will get wireless hotspots setup for Nintendo 3DS units. Not only will you be able use the Wi-Fi but there will also be movie trailers and gaming extras to be downloaded.

Exactly what these extras are and if the rest of the world will see such extras remains to be seen. Were hoping to see a similar plan in Australia soon.

Nintendo and Best Buy to Bring Custom Downloadable Content to Nintendo 3DS Owners

Nintendo 3DS Will Connect Automatically to Best Buy Wireless Hot Spots

REDMOND, Wash. & MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo and retail partner Best Buy are collaborating to give Nintendo 3DS™ owners customized, automatic wireless access at some 1,000 select Best Buy store locations nationwide beginning June 7. Once connected, the service will provide access to a variety of fun content via the system’s built-in Wi-Fi functionality, including the new SpotPass™ feature. The Best Buy service will also include exclusive offers as well as additional entertainment content such as gaming extras and movie trailers. Nintendo 3DS, which lets people see 3D visuals without the need for special glasses, launched March 27 at a suggested retail price of $249.99.

“Nintendo 3DS turns the page in portable gaming not just because of the stunning, glasses-free 3D visuals, but also in the way it keeps people connected to their friends, their games and their world,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Best Buy provides a firsthand look at the platform with experts to help people understand everything it offers.”

“We want our customers to fully tap into the potential of their Nintendo 3DS device, so we’re pleased to offer free access to special Wi-Fi and SpotPass content in-store,” said Chris Homeister, senior vice president of entertainment for Best Buy. “As a retail partner for SpotPass, this is another way that we’re delivering best-in-class gaming experiences at our stores across the country.”

Remember that Nintendo 3DS features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo3ds.com.

Xbox 360 to get the full 3D treatment?

Microsoft looks likely to bring 3D to the Xbox 360, with the company all set to reveal its 3D plans at E3 2011.

This is according to Eurogamer, which is quoting unnamed sources close to the matter who say that the 3D will be the same as what you currently get on the PS3 and that it could well be announced at this year's E3.

Sony announced its 3D firmware upgrade for the PS3 back in February 2010, with the update finally landing in June.

Although the Xbox 360 technically already has 3D content out ? Call of Duty: Black Ops was released in stereoscopic 3D ? it doesn't currently do it to the exacting specifications of the PS3, which outputs at 1280x1470.

Xbox 360

It seems, however, the Xbox 360 may well be getting the HDMI 1.4 protocol adopted by the PS3 (Sony has managed to cram most of HDMI 1.4's specs into its 3D without actually giving the PS3 a full hardware upgrade), which would allow Microsoft to market the Xbox 360 as an all-singing, all-dancing 3D gaming machine.

"The machine is not only very capable, it's more capable than the PlayStation 3 of doing stereo, assuming you don't have one of the old crappy ones with the composite leads... assuming you have a HDMI Xbox," said Eurogamer's man on the inside.

"The bottleneck is more on the graphical throughput for rendering out in stereo."

If you want to find out what else Microsoft could be launching at E3, then check out our in-depth Microsoft at E3 2011: what to expect feature.
