News: David Braben slams PS3 hackers
"Right now it is Sony that is hurting."
PS3 hackers who cling to misguided 'I own the console so I can do what I like' arguments are hurting game developers and buyers and publishers - the lot.
That's the opinion of David Braben, creator of Elite and founder of Frontier Developments (LostWinds, Kinectimals).
"It really annoys me when hackers claim they can do what they like with what they find, especially when it is destructive to the security of all the other PS3 machines," declared Braben on Develop.

News: Dragon Age II signs Florence + Machine
Part-one of soundtrack only 2.
Grammy Award winner Florence + The Machine are on the Dragon Age II soundtrack.
Florence's song "I'm not calling you a liar" has been re-imagined by DA2 composers Inon Zur and Steve Schnur - with help from renowned producer Jack Joseph Puig - to become "I'm Not Calling You A Liar (Dragon Age II: Varric's Theme)". It sounds absolutely amazing! The title, I mean - I've not heard the song. Steve Schnur reckons the end result is "an epic anthem for the next stage of the Dragon Age legend".
Part one of the Dragon Age II soundtrack can be bought for a paltry 2 on 8th March at various digital music dealers.

Nintendo 3DS welcomed by the world at Japanese launch
Although several stores in Japan accepted only pre-orders for the system, there were still crowds of people who waited in line on a cold morning, in front of one of the very few stores known to be offering same-day stock, Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara. People who were lucky enough to snag a pre-order there in January (where pre-order stock was immediately exhausted) got their consoles at 8:30 this morning Tokyo time, while those waiting in line needed to wait until an hour later when the store opened.
As we’ve seen from all the various 3DS preview events held both here and overseas, people are very excited about the 3DS and the way it will propel gaming to the next level. Indeed, 3DS fever had swept the crowds in Tokyo this morning. "I have been away from playing games for a while," says Hitoshi Yanagi, a 39-year-old Tokyo resident, "but 3DS brought me back to it."
Nintendo expects to sell 4 million 3DS consoles in Japan before March 31 (which, of course, is when the 3DS launches here in Australia). Will it ever outsell the DS family? Who knows? We’ll have more from the 3DS launch in Japan shortly.

UK developer relaunching ZX Spectrum
Sinclair's ZX Spectrum is set to be relaunched by UK developer Elite in 2012 to celebrate the classic gaming computer's 30th anniversary.
Those gamers of a certain age will no doubt fondly remember the ZX Spectrum from the early-to-mid 1980s, with Elite set to cash in on the current popularity of retro gaming amongst this demographic.
Wireless ZX Spectrum 2012
The Telegraph reports that the studio ? who originally developed many of the best ZX Spectrum games ? will soon release a wireless replica of Sir Clive's all-in-one keyboard gaming computer.
Details beyond this are scarce, with speculation that the 'new' Spectrum may well work wirelessly with the Apple iPhone and other peripherals.
Elite currently does a decent business re-developing a classic range of the Speccie's original smash hit games for smartphones.
Would a new ZX Spectrum work? Would anybody actually buy it? Or is this a simple example of retro-irony gone insane?
TechRadar has contacted Elite for further details on its plans to re-release the Spectrum.

Sony drops features from NGP to keep price down
Sony has dropped certain features that it originally wanted to have in the forthcoming NGP handheld gaming console in order to keep the pricing down, according to a Sony studios boss.
SCE Worldwide Studio boss Shuhei Yoshida told Edge that some elements were deliberately dropped from the NGP plan, following lessons learned from the original PS3 launch.
NGP pricing concerns
Pricing of Sony's Next Generation Portable is likely to not be announced for some time yet, with hopeful rumours on games news sites suggesting the new console may well arrive in time for Christmas 2011.
Gamers will no doubt remember E3 2006, when Sony revealed the launch price of $599 for the US and 499 for the UK for its (then new) PS3 home console.
"I can't talk about a definitive price [for NGP] at this stage," SCE Worldwide Studio boss Shuhei Yoshida told Edge this month. "But since the very beginning we had a target in mind. So, when considering various features, we always had our price range in mind. There were elements that we found pretty cool, but had to set aside to remain on target. It's a big lesson we learnt from the PS3.
"There's no point putting everything you want into a device and doing the math later. We always had the price and consumer in mind. We had to sell something that people could buy."
What those elements were will no doubt be the subject of flurried and flustered debates on gaming forums for the next six months, as we all await further news on Sony's launch plans for NGP.
Analyst Nick Gibson from Games Investor Consulting told TechRadar: "Getting hardware pricing strategies right is an extremely difficult balancing act between including features that will add to the appeal and differentiation of the hardware and minimising the loss (or, in Nintendo's case, maximising the profit) on each new hardware unit sold-in to retail.
"Gamer tastes and spending proclivities are ever changing so it is not too surprising that Sony is still learning lessons from its most recent major hardware launch."
300 sweet spot?
Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 magazine, said explained to TechRadar: "I think the retailer-mooted 300 ? or just under at 299.99 ? is critical to its success. Sony says they've learnt lessons, and while my inclination is to scepticism, the hardware design and software suite certainly reflects gamer feedback and nods to market trends.
"Whatever the price, they'll launch with OK numbers to the hardcore early adopters but, as ever, killer content is key ? can they lure hardcore, but less cash flush, gamers to NGP in the way that, say, Nintendogs or Brain Training did for casual gamers on DS?
A straight Uncharted port wouldn't be enough ? it'd need to be an all new franchise entry, with all the clout of Uncharted 3."
Dawkins also believes that success of the console may lie in the diversity and pricing of the PlayStation Suite: "Sony needs a wide variety of apps, from the novelty, to the ingenious, costing anywhere from 60p to full price 30 or more," he explained.
"Sony has got a portable games machine that's slightly more expensive than iPhone (up front, at least), but with better games, that's cheaper than iPad, with similar media browsing abilities.
"When you put it that way, it sounds like a classic 'danger' mid-market proposition ? making the premium on content even higher"

News: Ubisoft feels "guilty" for BG&E flop
HD revamp not a "quick and dirty port".
Ubisoft still feels sore over the failure of cult 2003 adventure favourite Beyond Good & Evil to set tills ringing, according to the producer of the forthcoming HD makeover.
"Everyone at Ubisoft knows that Beyond Good & Evil did not get the success it should have had, and, in my opinion, everyone feels a little guilty about that," Wang Xu told Eurogamer.
Consequently, the publisher is pulling out all the stops to make sure the HD version, which arrives on Xbox Live Arcade next week, is done right, Xu insisted.

That's 14 years' worth of names.
A lot of people have worked on Duke Nukem Forever in nearly 14 years. And Gearbox Software - the new and final developer - wants to name each and every one of them.
The hunt has begun.
"Duke Nukem Forever is legendary in its development cycle. Over the years the game has been in the hands of several publishers and many developers have come through the doors at 3DRealms that may have contributed in some way to the game," wrote Gearbox on its website.
