Majoras Mark on the Nintendo 3DS? A possibility, says Aonuma

Ocarina of Time 3D has done well, so why not some Majoras Mask action?

The Nintendo 64 has so far offered the Nintendo 3DS two great classics. Ocarina of Time 3D hasnt aged a bit and Starfox 64 will again bring the games to a new audience. So what about Ocarina of Times older and slightly twisted brother, Majoras Mask?

In a new interview with Nintendo Power, Eiji Aonuma was asked about the possibility of Majoras Mask coming to the Nintendo 3DS. Aonuma then turned the tables on Nintendo Power asking would they like to see it; a resounding yes was his response.

"It’s been 13 years since Ocarina of Time was originally released, and one of the big things that made this remake possible was that there was an output of emotions from people who said they would like to see this game done. We said we could do it in 3D, so we did. I think certainly if there was a similar output of emotion and clamour from fans for a remake of Majora’s Mask, it wouldn’t be an utter impossibility."

Eiji Aonuma then goes on to say that he thinks that a handheld is the best way to play the game. The games unique three day limit could mean that playing it on a handheld would make it even more suitable to play.

Want Majoras Mask? Then youll have to let Nintendo know somehow. We suggest rioting.

EA: Wii U matches PS3 and Xbox 360

EA developers have confirmed that the forthcoming Wii U console from Nintendo is easily as powerful as the Sony PS3 or the Microsoft Xbox 360.

EA Sports' vice president Andrew Wilson confirmed that his team now have the latest dev kits from Nintendo and that the tech can do anything that PS3 or 360 can do.

Happy with the new box

Wilson told Eurogamer that, "as every new piece of hardware and every new development library comes through we get a greater understanding of the power. With our early research we had been very happy with the output of the box and we expect that that will only go up moving forward.

"There are added challenges for us as developers when you think about rendering on two screens and what that might mean, but we're looking forward to that challenge.

"I think we'll be able to do anything that we can do on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the Wii U. That's our hope?but again we're still in the early stages."

Release date speculation

Eurogamer also (unofficially) pegs the Wii U release date as August 2012, as that is the date that EA's launch title Darksiders II is currently confirmed for. Clearly though, it is still early days, and these launch plans could well change considerably over the next year or more.

Wilson also said that there was an "openness and willingness" at Nintendo to work closely with EA and other third party developers and game publishers, adding that online gaming in particular was "something that we're working very closely with Nintendo on".

He explained, "We are highlighting to them what we believe are the most important elements to that infrastructure to deliver a connected experience that we think is the future of gaming."

EA's accolades come as Nintendo announces disappointing financial results; no doubt all concerned are hoping that the Wii U will turn it the company's fortunes around.

Sony patents interactive PlayStation doll

Forget about motion-control, PlayStation-compatible dolls would seem to be the new future of videogaming, if the latest patent news from Sony is anything to go by.

This week, the US Patent Office has revealed that Sony is looking to develop a PlayStation-compatible interactive doll.

Sony's new PlayStation peripheral takes the idea that Microsoft had way back in 1997 with its soon-to-be-forgetten ActiMate tech toy and runs with it, with Sony mentioning Microsoft's earlier project a number of times in its new patent application.

Title range

Sony's new patent reads as follows: "The success of such interactive toys depends on there being a good range of titles for the toy to interact with both at launch and into the future.

"It is also dependent on whether parents will buy a comparatively expensive toy whilst believing it will require further purchases of videos to maintain their child's interest. The present invention aims to mitigate or alleviate the above problem."

Expect further news from Sony on its new PlayStation doll at some point soon, which looks like it will feature wireless internet, USB and Ethernet ports to let the thing connect up to "other peripheral devices in addition to game controllers", such as Sony's PlayStation Portable and the EyeToy.

Wireless

"The interactive toy may be readily arranged to communicate with a PS3 via either a WiFi or Bluetooth wireless link," adds Sony's patent.

"Where a toy is not licensed to interact fully with a media disk, the PS3 can issue generic interaction instructions that follow the spirit of the interactive content on the disk, allowing the toy for example to give generic positive and negative comments as appropriate," the patent adds (slightly more frighteningly).

"This avoids frustration by the user, who as a child is likely to be unaware of and unconcerned by licensing issues. Thus alternatively or in addition, rather than sending a specific instruction to perform a specific action, the PS3 could send a more abstract instruction such as 'act surprised' that is interpreted by the toy according to the resources it has available ? for example, the ability to throw up its arms, or to select an appropriate phrase from a built in vocabulary.

"More generally, such a layer of abstraction can simplify and reduce the amount of supplementary data needed, as it allows each type of toy to react in character without the need for different supplementary data tracks. A number of such basic responses could be codified and pre-programmed within suitably enabled toys.

Much like the millions of PlayStation fanboys when they read the above news story, Sony also wants its new PlayStation doll to be able to cry be using "a refillable liquid reservoir and a liquid release means (for example to generate tears)."

id Software on the future of mobile gaming

John Carmack, one of the most innovative and tech-savvy games designers of our generation, thinks that mobile smartphone gaming is the future.

Carmack has recently released the critically-acclaimed Rage for iPad and iPhone and iPod touch, a game that has caused many gamers and hardcore games developers to take a long, hard look at the potential of "proper" games on iOS devices.

The overwhelmingly positive response to Carmack's first iOS game from QuakeCon last year clearly shows that there is a market for proper non-casual games amongst adult smartphone owners.

Rage on mobile

Jason Kim, producer on the forthcoming PC and console version of id's Rage ? out this coming October ? told CVG recently that Carmack knocked the iOS version of the game together in almost no time.

"It's really been interesting to see our mobile development team work on that compartmentalised piece of Rage content," Kim told CVG.

"It's another one of those great things working at id with John Carmack and those guys that are able to take some idea and turn it into a whole product that people can actually play and get in their hands.

"John went away and literally in a couple of weeks, came back with an engine that works on the iPhone," he added

"When he was walking around the office with it working on the iPhone, he would show it to people and their jaws were dropping like, 'Oh my God is that running on iPhone? Is that real time or is that a video?'

"He was moving things around in real time and this is just him going off and making something that runs on a little mobile device.

"That's him being able to analyse the hardware and understanding how to create rendering technology and maximises the opportunities within that piece of hardware and what he can program to make it work.

More to be done

Kim continued: "I think there's a lot more that could be done there but we don't have it all planned out, it's actually nice not to know how different things are going to be. Mobile devices are changing very quickly, some people are changing their phones every year.

I think it depends on what really happens with these mobile devices, what happens on the Apple Store, how Android works and what kind of store front they have and how popular those apps become.

"There are so many different ways that this could go and it's not totally clear to us but we put something out there and I think it's done really well for us. It's a foray into uncharted territory and it begins with John saying, 'I want to get a game working on that little device'.'"

News: Single-player-only games need to change

Says Shadows of Damned director Guarini.

Shadows of the Damned director Massimo Guarini believes single-player-only games need to be cheaper. When they are, the pressure to justify cost will disperse and games can simply be.

"Single-player-only games are nowhere close to being doomed. The problem lies in how they're produced, through which channels they're sold and at which price points," Guarini explained to GameSpot Australia.

"I can't see in any way a single-player experience being less engaging or interesting because of the absence of multiplayer.

'Mass Effect 3' Cover Art Awaits Your Vote, Blonde Shepard With A Commanding Lead

Something I've always admired about the "Mass Effect" series is its seeming equality ? in gameplay ? towards the gender of protagonist Shepard.
