Nintendo has announced that it will partner with retail giant HMV for the UK launch of the 3DS handheld on 25 March.
HMV's flagship store on Oxford Street will play host to the main UK launch, with the 3DS going on sale at one minute past midnight on 25 March, but people will also be able to get their mitts on the games gadget from midnight at 100 other HMV stores
There will also be an 'exclusive VIP event' at London's Old Billingsgate for 2,000 guests, with tickets offered out to UK 'Club Nintendo' members via email, and through various competitions.
First 500
"Games enthusiasts attending the midnight launch at HMV Oxford Street will not only be among the first in the UK to get their hands on their very own Nintendo 3DS, but the first 500 to purchase the console will each be able to claim a free 3DS game of their choice," added Nintendo's release.
"Fans attending the official launch will receive a special commemorative launch-night pack containing numerous Nintendo rewards, including a space blanket to keep them warm whilst queuing, a limited edition launch t-shirt and an exclusive Nintendo 3DS launch edition of Official Nintendo Magazine (whilst stocks last)."
Queues are expected, with wristbands being allocated to people on a first-come, first-served basis for entry to the launches.
3D experience
"Nintendo 3DS allows everyone to experience true 3D entertainment by bringing portability, affordability and glasses-free technology together for the first time anywhere in the world," says David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK.
"In the way Wii brought families together, Nintendo 3DS will bring people together, and we're delighted to be working alongside HMV to make this our biggest launch ever in the UK."
TechRadar's Nintendo 3DS review praised the handheld for taking a technological step forward, and offering something for the hardcore gamers as well as those interested in the autostereoscopic 3D screen.
