Sonys recently announced upgrade to the Playstation Portable, codenamed NGP, has swept around the internet over the last two days. It’s certainly a powerful piece of kit. So what does Nintendo think about it? Bloomberg went straight to the top today at an investor briefing in Japan and asked Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata what he thought about it.
In typical classy style, Iwata remained calm and cool saying that "They’re trying to appeal to customers from a different direction than us. The customers will decide which is correct." So will Nintendo be changing anything about the 3DS in lieu of the NGP announcement? "Nintendo is not the kind of company that thinks about how we oppose other company’s product," says Iwata. So that’s a no.
Also revealed yesterday was the Playstation Suite, Sony’s new platform which will allow Playstation content on non-Playstation hardware. Bloomberg asked if this is something Nintendo would ever do. "So long as I am CEO, it definitely will not happen." replied Iwata. Strike two.
Pick a side, or not and refrain from being a douche.
At a separate Q&A today, Iwata was also asked on why Western Studios seem to play little importance on Handheld games. He puts it up to developers finding it difficult to devote resources to portable systems, but he’s confident it will change. Iwata believes when the importance of handhelds in the west changes, so will the efforts by developers. He even says that the NGP may even help things along, but there is also other factors that will play a part of it.
