News: Lionhead has "super secret second project"

Plus, Fable Kinect uses Milo & Kate tech.

Fable developer Lionhead has a "super secret second project" in development alongside recently announced Kinect title Fable: The Journey, studio boss Peter Molyneux has disclosed.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the outspoken industry veteran made the proclamation at the Gamelab conference in Barcelona today, though wouldn't offer any further details.

He did, however, take the opportunity to divulge a few new details regarding Fable: The Journey, revealing that the forthcoming game uses "huge amounts" of tech left over from the infamous Milo & Kate demo.

Sega hack sees 1.29m users' data stolen

Sega is the latest video games company to fall victim to the mass hacking spree, after confirming that the personal information of 1.29m users has been stolen.

The Japanese company has confirmed that the names, addresses, email addresses and passwords of users were stolen from the London-based Sega Pass website on Friday.

In a statement, the former console titan reassured users that their credit card details had not been accessed.

The Sega hack is the fourth high profile strike against the gaming industry in the last couple of months. The infamous Sony PlayStation Network hack was followed up by hits on Nintendo and Codemasters.

Apology

Sega was quick to apologise for the theft and says it is investigating the intrusion while the Sega Pass site is suspended.

"We sincerely apologise for troubles this incident has caused to our customers," said the statement, written in Japanese."An investigation has been launched to find the cause and channels used for the leakage."

In an email to customers, Sega explained that it had reset all passwords and encouraged users to do the same for other websites for which customers used the same log-on details.

The Sega Pass website is used to sell games, offer support and also keep fans updated with the latest releases. There's no word yet on when the service will be live again.

LulzSec, who admitted a hack on Sega's great rival Nintendo, has denied responsibility.

Kirby TV channel coming to a Wii near you... today!

Nintendo adding a channel to the Wii dedicated to the pink puff ball

Here’s something you didn’t see coming. Nintendo will from today (Europe time) be adding a new channel to the Wii. It’s a Kirby TV channel and will have over 50 episodes of the Kirby animated series. You won’t be able to watch them all at once though as there will be two added each week. An episode will be added each Monday and Thursday. You’ll be able to watch the episodes for two weeks until they add two more new ones.

The channel is coming exclusive to PAL regions and yes, that includes Australia and New Zealand. The rest of Europe is included, that’s UK, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Greece, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. The episodes will be available in English, German, French and Italian.

We suspect the channel will go live the same time that the eShop, DSiWare and WiiWare updates go live. That, folks, is late Thursday night for Australians. Best to just check it out Friday morning.

News: THQ publishing Witcher 2 on Xbox 360

What happened to Namco Bandai?

THQ has been announced as the publisher of The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360.

THQ label THQ Partners will dish out the converted PC game in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

But it wasn't THQ that published The Witcher 2 on PC. That honour was Namco Bandai's, as was publishing The Witcher 1 (as Atari). So what happened there? We don't know - yet.

Microsoft: we don't wish PSN hacks upon anybody

The Chief Operating Officer of Xbox has admitted that it would never want anybody to go through the hacking woes its rival Sony did, which is why it has kept quiet about the security situation.

Xbox COO Dennis Durkin was interviewed by Industry Gamers, where he talked about the Sony situation and how it has affected the entire industry.

"It's bad for the industry that this has happened to Sony. It's very, very bad. It's very damaging," he explained.

"So we don't wish that upon anybody and you've seen we've been actually pretty quiet on the subject because we don't want to appear to even be looking to be taking advantage of somebody else's situation like that. That's just not in our DNA."

All about the Network

Sony has finally got over the PlayStation Network hack which brought down the entire PSN for nearly a month.

A compensation package of new games and trial subscriptions of PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited have satiated some of the anger felt by PSN members, but it isn't something that will be forgotten in a hurry.

Durking believes that Microsoft's years of perfecting its security should mean that Xbox Live users should be vigilant about security but the service is as secure as it can be.

"Like in society, you can't always protect everything. There are people who are going to want to disrupt things and you can't always perfectly protect against every scenario, but we're going to make sure we do everything we can to be sure we're as secure as we possibly can be.

"And thankfully ? I'm grateful to be part of a company like Microsoft, which has such deep investments across its whole ecosystem that we leverage. Because it's an industry challenge and it's something that we all have to get better at."

Reggie says the two biggest 3DS problems are fixed

A big Nintendo franchise and the eShop are the answers - both of which are now here

The Nintendo 3DS has had a stumbled launch out of the gate. It hasnt done too bad, but it has fallen short of the expectations even Nintendo had set for the console. However Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime, believes the two problems that were causing slow sales of the console have been fixed. What two problems were these? The first was the lack of a big Nintendo franchise. Thats now been resolved (at least everywhere but in Australia) with the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

Reggie says that "when we started talking to consumers who were aware or interested, but hadnt yet bought [the Nintendo 3DS], they told us two things: first, I need a big Nintendo franchise for our purchase. The second thing was I need the network to be up. I need the connected experiences to be there."

That second one, you guessed it, is about the Nintendo eShop, the web browser and even features like the lack of DSiWare transfer that were holding people back. Reggie says though even though they didnt have the eShop up for launch, the console wasnt launched early. "The system did not launch earlier than planned," says Fils-Aime. "We thought there would have been a tighter gap between launch and the first network update." The eShop was originally planned to be released before the end of May; it eventually launched in the first week of June, just before E3. We think though Nintendo should have had it out even earlier, perhaps even needed it then.

News: Team Meat starts "ambitious" new project

Meat Boy 3DS ruled out, Mac port soon.

The two-man team behind ruthless indie jumper Super Meat Boy has begun its next title, and it sounds like a far cry from the conventional platforming of its break-out hit.

Team Meat co-founders Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes confirmed to Eurogamer that work is underway on an "ambitious", "fun", "more experimental" project, though were coy on more precise details.

"I think it's safe to say that Meat Boy was a very straightforward game. We didn't really reach outside the box in terms of design," explained McMillen. "I think with the new game we definitely get a bit more experimental with the design.

Report: Xbox 720 to be unveiled at E3 2012

The successor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is likely to be unveiled at E3 2012, according to a games developer claiming to be working on one of the first titles.

A high-ranking source at Crytek told Videogamer.com that TimeSplitters 4 is being developed for the next Xbox, using Mircosoft's updated DX11 development tool.

The report claims: "The Crysis 2 developer says that Microsoft will announce the existence of a new Xbox within the next 12 months, hinting that an E3 2012 reveal is likely."

The source noted that, although no console specs have been confirmed, DX11 - which includes tessellation, multi-threaded rendering and compute shaders - has had a hugely positive effect on the visuals.

720 Before PS4

The Crytek source also revealed that Microsoft is also likely to launch the new Xbox before PlayStation 4, although Sony is said to be investing heavily in next-gen development.

Although Microsoft failed to announce any new hardware at E3 2011, it did confirm reams of new software for the 360, including Halo 4, and a world of new games for the Kinect platform.

That suggests the company believes that there's plenty of life in the Xbox 360 yet.

Naturally, both Crytek and Microsoft have declined to comment officially on the matter.

Love Plus 3DS to have virtual girlfriend import tax

Importing data from DS to 3DS to cost money

Konami’s virtual love simulator New Love Plus for the 3DS will charge people money to import their girlfriends from the DS version of Love Plus, but really, it’s not their fault.

The data will be imported using a downloadable program from the 3DS’s eShop, but it is reported Nintendo will not allow third parties to offer apps for free on the eShop, forcing Konami to set a price. But to be fair, they did set the lowest price possible, which is 200 yen.

To make up for the cost of the tool Konami will include some sort of bonus, but there are no details on what it is yet.

Chances are if you’re obsessed enough with your virtual girlfriends to hold mock weddings, you probably don’t mind paying 200 yen to see your girlfriend in the third dimension.

Gametraders selling Ocarina of Time 3D early, but...

Gametraders selling EU imports of Ocarina of Time means no CD for you

We’ve been listening to the goss on Twitter today and it seems that several Victorian Gametraders have and had copies of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for sale today. Sydney stores are apparently selling from tomorrow as well. However what they are selling is the European copy of the game - there’s nothing wrong with that (Nintendo might see it differently though) and it will work fine in your Australian Nintendo 3DS.

However these are not Australian copies and will not come with a Australian Club Nintendo code for you to redeem your free Ocarina of Time 3D Soundtrack. They’ll have a European soundtrack which might be possible to redeem but you’ll have to have an European address and European Club Nintendo account. A worker at a Victorian store confirmed which version they had on hand.

We’re not able to confirm if the EU code in the game will work with the AU Club Nintendo. While other EU Club Nintendo codes work for third party titles, we’re of the understanding that first party (ex Zelda, Pilotwings) codes do not.

To tell the difference is simple, the Australian version looks as above. Gold cover and big green G rating from the Classification Board. European copies will be the artwork of Link riding on Epona in Hyrule Field (much like our site background).

Selling imports is nothing new for retailers, but they’re advertising it as the Australian version - when clearly it is not.

Importers denied: Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack CD for AU buyers only

As suspected, if youve imported Ocarina of Time - your code wont work

With the early (import) release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D last week we warned that picking up a European copy of the game might not get you the soundtrack CD. Now Nintendo Australia has updated the information regarding the redemption of the CD to include the following;

Offer valid only to Australian or New Zealand residents who register The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time 3D released by Nintendo Australia Pty Ltd.

In other words, if you didn’t buy an Australian copy of Ocarina of Time 3D, you’re not getting the CD from Nintendo Australia. Which, you know is fair.

There was some speculation (even by us) that the codes may work from European copies as some other Nintendo 3DS games which include Club Nintendo codes work on our store. However keeping with the trend, first party Nintendo games do not.

Still no word yet as to when we’ll be able to register the games, but we’re hoping it’s the 30th. The ’release date’ for the game.

In Depth: 15 iPhone and iPad games like Bejeweled

Simple, compelling videogame concepts can provide familiarity along with a foundation for innovation. This means you can pick up and play a game that's largely based on a concept you know and immediately figure out how to play, even if the changes result in a radically different experience.

One such concept is tile-matching, popularised by PopCap's Bejeweled series. Although other tilematching/swapping games preceded it, Bejeweled's online distribution, polish and game design ensured it cemented itself as a leader in its field.

It therefore follows that if you're on the hunt for a match-three game for iOS, you should first go back to the source. With Bejeweled 2 + Blitz (59p, iPhone) , you get four modes, including the traditional Classic and Attack (swap gems, wait for the grid to refill and continue until there are no more matches or, in Attack, you run out of time), Endless (a casual, stress-free mode lacking a timer and ending) and the frenetic, exciting Blitz. The last of those ties in with the Facebook Flash game, and you have one minute to get as many points as possible.

Unlike Bejeweled's other modes, Blitz doesn't force you to wait until gems have settled before you make another swap - instead, you rapidly switch gems and create chains as more jewels fall into the well. Given Bejeweled's relative simplicity and the fact that PopCap's game is so polished, there's little point in considering the myriad clones that litter the App Store.

PiyoBlocks

Instead, go further afield, exploring games that expand the basic concept. Piyo Blocks 2 (1.79, iPhone) appears similar to Bejeweled but has enough innovation to warrant purchase.

Gameplay is based solely around Blitz-style mechanics. Piyo mode has you match a quota of each tile type to advance, while Hyaku levels up when you acquire 100 of any tile. You also get Time Attack, Endless, Three Seconds (make a match within three seconds or your game is over) and Disco (regular board refreshes) modes.

Piyo and Hyaku's timers are too lenient, making those modes easy for match-three aficionados, but the game's fun nonetheless. Avoid the HD version for iPad though - instead of blowing up the seven-by-seven grid, it adds more slots, unbalancing the gameplay.

Paradise quest

Rather than including extra modes, many match games offer depth through quests. Paradise Quest(1.79, iPad) tasks you with matching tiles that represent resources that can be used to restore the Galapagos Islands. As you make a match, the board lazily scrolls in that direction, enabling you to explore the large levels and uncover objects required to progress.

For a pseudo-educational game, the tiny wildlife photos collected and static viewable environments are disappointing, but the gameplay's interesting, despite a lack of help regarding how to use objects. (Hint: tap on the map and tap where you want to go when using the vine.)

Around the world in 80 days

Around the World in 80 Days: The Game (59p, iPhone) is similar, if a mite simpler, with you completing the famous voyage by moving objects to the bottom of the grid for collection. Plenty of variation in board layouts, special tiles and the game's polish and responsiveness make it a great purchase for match-three fans.

Some quest-oriented games ramp up the role play side of things. Puzzle Quest Chapter 1 and 2(2.99, iPhone) and Puzzle Quest 2 (2.99) task you with completing numerous quests in a fantasy world of goblins, spells and demons.

The match-three mechanics are used for one-on-one battles; skulls represent attacks and coloured gems are Mana, which can be used to power spells that inflict further damage on your opponent. Both games have their fans, but we feel they're a bit grind-orientated rather than outright fun, and the sequel is hugely weighty and badly optimised, although it does offer plenty of depth and game time.

If we're honest, we'd sooner settle down with Dungeon Raid (1.79, iPhone), which distills Puzzle Quest down to its essence. Instead of swapping gems, you match by drawing lines through objects: shields to power up your defences; money to buy new kit; potions for health; and weapons and skulls to attack the latter.

Strategy comes from positioning pieces so you can attack skulls, and the role-play mechanics add a touch of extra depth to keep you coming back. As a bonus, there's no tedious traipsing around maps.

Azkend hd

Alternate match mechanics are the other major way in which games inspired by Bejeweled have made their mark. Azkend (1.79 for iPhone or 2.99 for Azkend HD for iPad) uses Dungeon Raid-like line-drawing, but in a rather more sedate, thoughtful setting.

Devil Invasion (59p, iPhone) boasts a hexagonal grid and uses somewhat similar combat ideas to Dungeon Raid but as a means of fending off, castle-defence-style, a string of monsters attacking you at the top of the screen.

Crystal Soul (59p, iPhone) has each match move a character around the grid, forcing you to use limited moves wisely.

Chop-Sushi

Chop Sushi! (59p for iPhone or 2.39 for Chop Sushi! HD for iPad) makes the single change of having you move pieces to the edge of a board to shift all the others inwards (a simple difference that rapidly made our brain hurt - but the game's fun cartoon graphics kept us hooked).

Some games deftly emphasise the gravity aspect within match games. Toy Balls! HD (1.19, iPad) has balls bouncing around the place, which you must save from getting zapped by stringing together matches, Dungeon Raid-style.

Linkoids

Linkoidz (1.79) has you grab an alien from the pile atop your shield and fling it back to make a match. Take too long and the shield fails, resulting in your spaceman becoming a snack for the ravenous aliens.

Linkoids

The extremely pretty, superficially relaxed Liqua Pop (59p, iPhone) brings you more down to earth, dragging together coloured bubbles of liquid that encourage a frog to climb a stem when they burst.

Greedy bankers

Finally, the amusing Greedy Bankers (1.19, iPhone) emphasises gravity within match games by doing away with a well-orientated play area entirely - instead, the grid is viewed from above, and you drag like-coloured gems together to create larger, far more valuable ones, with the aim of making enough cash before the timer runs out.

It's amazing to see how the basic concept of match-three games has been expanded and tinkered with to create so many familiar yet varying games - and the indie-friendly nature of the App Store ensures many more will arrive over the coming months, which is sure to make even the most ardent match-three fan happy.

News: Out This Week - 01/07/11

Resi Mercs! UFC! Dynasty Warriors!

The cast of Capcom's survival horror series reunites this week for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Heard the name before? You've probably played the all-fighting spin-off as a mini-game in Resi 4 and 5. It's expanded here, with a larger cast and extra features.

American Football title BackBreaker: Vengeance is another spin-off born out of a mini-mode. It's a downloadable arcade style title for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, born out of the original BackBreaker's Tackle Alley gameplay.

Want to get fit while beating people up? Take off your shell suit and slip into UFC Personal Trainer. Dubbed "The Ultimate Fitness System", it blends hardcore fisticuffs with Kinect, Move and Wii Remote huffing and puffing.

News: GoldenEye Reloaded in the works report

Wii shooter going multi-platform?

Activision is readying something called GoldenEye Reloaded, according to a set of domain names dug up by Twitter sleuth Superannuation.

The tipster spotted four URL registrations logged by the publisher last week for: goldeneye007gamereloaded.com, goldeneyereloadedgame.com, goldeneyereloaded007.com and goldeneye007reloaded.com.

There's no indication as to what exactly the publisher is up to, but a port of last year's largely excellent Eurocom-developed Wii shooter GoldenEye 007 seems a likely bet.

Official: Wii U not compatible with DVDs or Blu-rays

Nintendo has decided to go down the proprietary route with the Wii U, deciding not to make the next-gen games console compatible with DVDs or Blu-rays.

This is according to an investor Q&A which was held by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and had just been published into English.

Considering many use the Playstation 3 as their home entertainment system of choice, due to its Blu-ray functionality, it seems a little odd that Nintendo has decided to go off and create its own format ? but cost has been put down as the contributing factor.

In the Q&A, Iwata explained the lack of DVD and Blu-ray compatibility as: "We feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."

Wii U going social

The investor Q&A also highlighted that the Wii U will link up with social networks.

"After examining the penetration and adoption rate of social networking services like Facebook, etc, we've come to the conclusion that we are no longer in a period where we cannot have any connection at all with social networking services.

"Rather, I think we've come to an era where it's important to consider how the social graph of the social networking services can work in conjunction with something like a video game platform."

Another area that Iwata tackled was the mobile gaming market, where he said was not threatening Nintendo's livelihood in any way.

"I don't feel that there is competition or threat from mobile games for our video game business from the sense that, even before mobile games appeared, it's always been the nature of our job to continue to offer new experiences that players can't have on other devices, and that, as long as we can continue to do that, the consumer will want to play our games, but what we are sensitive to is the notion of the sense of value and what consumers are willing to pay for games."

The Nintendo Wii U was the undoubted talking point of E3 2011, even if Nintendo didn't actually give that many details of its new console away.
